Sam-E has worked well for me, after I knew how to take it properly that is. I took it for about 2 weeks before I actually did some reading about it and knew I was doing many things wrong. Including making the wrong purchase. Any brand will probably do, (as long as it is made properly, see #2 below) but I have found Nature Made to be the best selection when it came to purchasing Sam-E. (Yes, I have actually bought and tried the 200mg AND 400mg tablets) No matter what brand you buy, you have to give it TIME to work. 7-10 days is the timeframe that it will typically start to work in, but I have heard of occasions where it has taken longer. After 12 days if you have seen no positive change in mood, up the dose. Eventually, work your way up to taking 1200mg of Sam-E daily for best results.
Yes, these 400mg tablets ARE enteric coated, which you definitely want in your Sam-E supplement...more on this later.
Stomach Cramps and even the possibility of ulcers be a serious problem for people taking Sam-E. I have compiled a list of precautions and things you can do to prevent this:
1) Make sure you take this product on an EMPTY STOMACH. An empty stomach means not having eaten anything for roughly an hour. The best time to take this is in the morning, right after waking up. Finally, make sure you do not eat for at least 30 MINUTES after taking Sam-e. More time may be required as you take more of the supplement.
2) Do NOT purchase Sam-E tablets that are not enteric coated and are not in a box/blister wrap. The Entric coating prevents the pills from being absorbed by your body until they reach the lower intestine which will prevent a majority of stomach cramps and stomach pains. Not only this, but it will prevent the Sam-E from being dissolved in the stomach which renders it virtually useless. Again, the Nature Made 400mg tablets ARE enteric coated.
Also, On a lot of the "Product Ads from External Websites," I have seen a lot of retailers trying to hawk Sam-E in bottles...NOT ok! It is a BIG mistake to buy Sam-E in bottles, I won't get onto it here but you can google it and you will see why. It must be blister wrapped for ultimate freshness!

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome in late 2001 (I have a very severe debilitating case). I began taking SAMe in May of 2002 with a small dosage of 100mg (another brand). I immediately was 35% better, so began Nature Made SAMe at 200mg a day. I now take 400Mg a day, and after taking it for years now, I function 75% better versus without it. I have planned to increase to 800Mg to try for a 100% (we can hope can't we? :) ).
SAMe allows me to get out of bed, to move more fluidly, to feel good about facing the day, and CONTROLS MY PAIN in a way nothing else can. I cannot function without it.
I STRONGLY suggest this product for anyone suffering from a muscular, arthritic, or brain related disease that causes pain or discomfort. However you should see your doctor or a specialist before starting any new medication. |

SAM-E has been prescribed for many years in Europe for mild clinical depression and osteoarthritis, and there is quite a lot of good clinical data that it does indeed work, and without serious side effects. There's also one small study that suggests it may help with adult ADHD, and I believe it has helped with my symptoms.

| I started taking Sam-e over a month ago and I love it! Before starting it I was experiencing anxiety and panic attacks coupled with mood swings. I started keeping track of my mood and realized that I was having more bad days than good. Even little things would upset me and it was like once something happened (no matter how small) it just ruined my mood sometimes for a few hours and sometimes for the rest of the day. I ordered my Sam-e from wholehealth.com because they include a free bottle of Vitamin B Complex with each order. Sam-e can cause a build up of homocysteine in your system which is correlated with heart disease. The B Complex prevents homocysteine build up. I'm currently taking 400 mg a day. It started working quickly and I've experienced no side effects. I've been taking it for over a month and I just have a general sense of well being. I feel happier and I'm not having panic attacks anymore. I've taken Paxil in the past and this is less expensive and without the side effects. [...]. Read up on the benefits of taking a B Complex with it. It's worth mentioning that B Complex contains Vitamin B2 also called Riboflavin. When you take a Vitamin B supplement your body uses what it needs and if it's more than it needs the remainder of the B vitamin is excreted in your urine causing the urine to be very bright yellow. | I read about Sam-e in a book called Stop Depression Now, written by an M.D. and a PHd. I bought this product at a local Rite-Aid for a friend of mine who was so depressed that he couldn't work or function, and was borderline suicidal. Within a couple days, he said he didn't feel suicidal anymore. Within a week, he was back to taking care of himself, laughing and joking, has renewed interest in things he liked to do, and is now back to work!! He is like a different person! He started telling all his friends about it that are taking Prozac with no results. I'm amazed at the major changes and so quickly. He doubled up on this so is taking 800mg a day. According to the book, you would start out at 400mg per day, if no results within a week, then up it to 800mg. Like the books says, you also need a good B vitamin complex in addition to this. I gave him a really effective sublingual B tablet that makes a big difference for me also. |

| I'll keep this short. As the title says, this works as good as Paxil (and also all the other SSRIs and Tricyclics, most of which I've tried), but is about one quarter the price of Paxil, plus it has NO side effects, sexual or otherwise. An excellent product. I love the fact that it's all-natural, but still works as good as the harsh chemicals all the psychiatrists make their money from. I don't need those doctors anymore. Oh, yeah, you also don't need a prescription, just buy it from here or off the shelf. Have fun and enjoy life again. |

Late last year I came across an article for combating arthritis with natural supplements, sam-e being one of them. Having been diagnosed in 2007 with spinal arthritis at the age of 28, I was desperate to find something that worked. I began doing research on sam-e and it's properties and the more I read the more I was ready to try it. In early February of this year I began taking 400 mg a day and by the end of the week I could already tell a difference. By the end of the second week I was amazed at how well I felt. I went from being in constant pain to the occasional twinge here and there. Its been two months and these have been the best two months I've had since being diagnosed. I HIGHLY recommend this supplement.
Info: When taking sam-e its good to take b-vitamins as well, they help aid the sam-e in working. Take it on an empty stomach, about 30-40 minutes before breakfast. If you don't have time to eat or miss breakfast then take heartburn medication within a couple of hours, sam-e can cause painful heartburn if its allowed to release in your stomach instead of your colon. It may be necessary to increase your dose after a few weeks, as well, as you can plateau. If you are bi-polar or suspect you may be, then DO NOT take sam-e until you have spoken with your doctor first. Sam-e can cause some people with bi-polar disorder to go into a manic phase.
Over all this is an amazing product and I have been telling everyone I know about it. Google sam-e and you will find links to studies that outline the other benefits and possible benefits of sam-e. The biggest pitfall is the price, and while yes its expensive you can watch out for sales and buy in bulk, because it really is worth it if you are suffering from chronic pain as I did. It's worth its weight in gold if it means I get to run around the backyard with my kids!

I am still taking this product, and I STILL highly recommend it! I buy it in bulk on sale, and its still th best money I've ever spent! It not only has helped with my pain, but I've managed to lose 30 lbs since I began taking it! If you suffer from osteoarthritis, talk with your doctor, it might be the best decision you ever made. |

| I have taken this off and on for a few years for clinical depression/anxiety. I find it takes 2 weeks of taking it every day to get enough in my system to get the effects. I have tried prescription drugs for the depression 3 different times with horrific side affects. I always go back to Sam-E. It works and I don't have to deal with those awful side affects. If I forget for a couple days, or try to decrease from 400 mg a day, I do feel the difference. Without it, I go to a very dark place in my mind and have irrational thoughts. I also have no energy to even get out of bed. With it, I can function much better. I am disabled due to back injury. But the depression can be even more disabling without the Sam-E. I find too, Nature Made brand seems to work a bit better than others that are a bit cheaper. Something I will never be with out! |

I HAVE BEEN TAKING MEDS FOR DEPRESSION SINCE 2002...BUT IN ACTUALITY, I HAVE SUFFERED FROM DEPRESSION SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER. I HAVE TRIED ALMOST EVERY MEDICATION. Occasionally when I find myself slipping back into a low mood, I go out and buy some S-ame and add it to my antidepressant medication. | This works great for me!! I read on here a few bad reviews and that's ok cause maybe there not using it right, didn't give it time to work or maybe just didn't work at all. As the price goes, yea its on the higher side but again think about how much Meds will cost you. Shop around online like E-bay or Wal-mart. Also for those that said it didn't work. Try increasing the mg up slowly and take some Omega 3 6 9, a B complex Vitamin & don't forget to eat healthy as well. All this worked great for me! I'm going to increase my dosage next week to 600mg. |

I read about Sam-e a couple of weeks ago when I realized that I needed to do something about my "funk" that I just couldn't shake. Life in general, plus my tendency toward worry, were taking it's toll. In addition to feeling depressed, I was very tired and couldn't seem to find the energy to tend to all the tasks of the day.
Enter Nature Made Sam-e!
I began taking 2 (400mg) tablets per day and felt results very quickly. I took the first right before bed because I'd read that it can upset your stomach so I figured I'd try it when I wouldn't be conscious. And I took the second one the next morning before eating. By the end of that day, I could feel some improvement. Within 3 days, I felt waaaaaaaaaaaaay better!!!!
This stuff is amazing.
However, I only gave it 4 stars, instead of 5, because of 1 con. After a few days, I did start noticing some stomach upset. For me, it was very mild, HOWEVER when I forgot to take the supplement one night the next day I had some crampy pains that were rather uncomfortable.
With that said, the benefits so far outweigh that small con, that I'd be more than happy to keep Pepto on hand for the few occassions that it doesn't settle so well.
However, I wouldn't allow my negative point (or any other reviewers negative) to stop you from trying it. Everybody's make up is different and I'm willing to bet that most people won't have any side effects. Oh and if you don't have immediate results, keep the same thing in mind. It might take a few days to kick in for some folks. |

| I suffer with clinical depression and ADHD. I also have problems with anxiety. I was tired of being drugged up on prescription meds all the time, so I (stupidly) decided to stop taking them. After being miserable for a while, I fell upon SAM-e and decided to give it a try. I am very happy with how much it helps me. For me it doesn't work as well as the rx meds, but it takes the edge off my moods enough so that I can live a normal life, and it doesn't have any physical side effects. When I first started taking it, I had incredibly bad, vivid nightmares, but that only lasted for a couple of weeks. Going through the bad dreams was worth it for me, my life is bearable now (and the dreams are gone). If you have depression and/or anxiety problems, I recommend trying this out! It does help with my ADHD too, just not as much. |

I really don't know if it is power of suggestion that I have read so many positive reviews, but I have been taking it about a month and feel more even keeled now. I feel like I have more "happy" days than I used to and less freak outs. Who knows if it is a coincidence or if I was taking a placebo if I could have the same result, but I know I will continue to take this. Downside is that it is spendy! Previously I was taking St. Johns wort which I don't think helped me. |

| SAM-e worked great at helping my mood fluctuation during PMS. However, one side effect is major stomach cramps, which for me resulted in a visit to the ER. It was a toss up for me as to what was worse, PMS or the stomach pain, but I decided to stop taking the SAM-e in order to allow my stomach to heal. I am worried about an ulcer at this point, so if you get any gastric pain, take it seriously! The pain will not get better over time taking the SAM-e. In many ways it gets worse. |

I love SAM-e!
It turned me from a guy who had a handicapped sticker (and needed it) to someone who can walk for miles and leg press 300 pounds in the gym. It (and only it, I made no other changes) saved me a second knee replacement in 2002.
I still use it every day, taking 400 mg each morning and evening. Why two stars? I'm trying to get your attention. This price is excessive.
My local Sam's Club sells the Schiff brand for about [...] plus tax for 100 of the 200 mg caplets (equivalent to 50 of the Nature Made). I'm confident that Costco at least matches that.
Puritan's Pride, who I have used for years [...], always has some kind of sale going on. Today (5/5/09) they are doing a buy-one-get-one selling 60 (sixty) 400 mg shrink-wrapped capsules for [...]. If you buy two, you get another three for a total of 150 caplets for [...]. Their shipping is about five bucks.
SAM-e is a spectacular supplement, but I don't want you to pay inflated prices!

OK, this is the most reputable SAM-e brand and I've given it 2 trials a year apart.
And yes, I'm pretty sure I noticed the advertised mood and joint benefits each time.
But what I also noticed each time was that my hair was falling on the keyboard and my eyelashes were irritated by my shedding eyebrows!
This is why I re-tried it this year - hoping it was all my imagination and that I could still reap the benefits.
But nope, same thing each time. I finally googled about hairloss and SAME-e, and sure enough, other people reported the same problem.
I won't argue that this is probably a rare side-effect, and that most people will benefit from taking this stuff. So, give it a try, and don't worry about your hair (at first, anyway).
But, speaking just for me, any mood improvements were offset by a receding hairline...so, back to the drawing board! |

The quality of this product has gone down considerably
in the past eight years since I first started taking it.I
suffer from major depression and panic disorder
and this product would always come to the rescue.
But the last three times I tried it,it doesn't seem
to work as well.I'm also finding whole undigested
pills in my stool.Clearly they are adding too much or changed
the enteric coating.Sad,because I loved this stuff.
I will move on and try another brand.

I wanted to try this for mild depression after reading so many amazing reviews.
Unfortunately it did not work for me. 23 days in(3+ weeks) I feel no difference except stomach cramps after taking the pill every day.
I did what you're supposed to do I beleive. I took them on an empty stomach when I would wake up. I would avoid eating for 30-60 mins as per the instructions. I also made sure to buy enteric coated shrink wrapped ones, this brand and CVS brand. 400mg.
I dont know, maybe it will work for you, but it did absolutely nothing for me. In-fact... I feel more depressed now that I have enured stomach cramps for 3 weeks and I'm $40 poorer
Give it a try if you want, but its expensive... and I couldnt even force myself through the whole box. I really wanted it to work, I wish it had. |
