Beats the Other Ice Packs Cold!

Review Date: April 18, 2010
Reviewer: mechanic9,
Well, its a cold pack that does the same thing as a lot of other cold packs do- cools down an injured or inflammed area. However these packs have a lot of "cool" features users just love, such as...

-they're made of this gel that enables them to keep their shape
-they cool fairly quickly
-will give you around 20 good minutes of cool
-last most people years
-are the kind used by a lot of physical therapy clinics
-they're portable

As you can see, these aren't your $5 Walmart ice packs and you get what you pay for. So who should get them? Anyone who has a chronic ache or pain they want to get rid of or an injury they need to treat with ice to decrease pain and swelling. Handy to have around, don't think twice about getting one if you're in the market. Those struggling with elbow tendinitis might also want to check out Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow.
The Best Cold Therapy Pack I've Ever Tried

Review Date: January 3, 2009
Reviewer: Darby,
I've had knee surgery, ankle sprains, and back trouble, and these are far and away the best cold packs I've tried (as of this writing). Both of the physical therapy centers I've frequented use them extensively. I own five of thesee, and I use them in rotation (two at work, two at home, and one for travel between). They're also handy for picnic coolers (to drape over the contents inside a cooler, to keep them cold from the top down). I sometimes use my 'travel' spare to keep highly perishable (or frozen) groceries extra cool while transporting them from the store to home.

STRENGTHS:

* They're very pliable (they get firmer with once you get below -10F, but are still sufficiently pliable down to -15F) and conform well to your body ... this one is ideal for the back, and the knee. Because they're pliablem, they're extra freezer-friendly - you can fold them in half to take up less space in there, or leave them flat for faster re-chilling.

* They chill fairly quickly, and hold a fair amount of cold. They claim 30 mins, but it's really only 20, with direct contact ... 30 if you fold it in half, and put a towel over it, before applying it.

* Long life - I've had mine for 3 years, and so far only one of them has lost seal and begun to develop a bubble inside.

MINOR NITS:

* Because they're so pliable, you sometimes have to put them on a hard surface and sorta stretch and squish them back into proper rectangular shape, with an even thickness.

* I wish these were about 10-15% thicker, so that they held their cold just a tad longer otherwise, they're nearly perfect.

Highly recommended.

p.s. There are two versions of this product. According to the sales clerk I spoke to at Chattanoga, the blue vinyl ones (which I own) are made by one manufacturer, and have a 1 year warrantee. The black polyurethane ones are made by a different manufacturer, and supposedly feel the same, but only have a 6 month warrantee.

p.p.s. Watch out for venders who try to rip you off by advertising an artificially low sale price, and then try to sock it to you with absurd S&H costs. For instance, I just shopped 2 different suppliers here on amazon with an order for 3 of these ... one of them only wanted $8 total S&H (reasonable), and the other had a cheaper list price but wanted $30 for S&H (scam alert !). It pays to comparison shop.
Excellent, professional grade cold pack that will last for YEARS!

Reviewer: Avid Reader,
I have the 23-inch "cervical" shape col-pac. I bought this one direct from the manufactuer's website (also a good deal, but ++ shipping) when I was having shoulder problems, and it has seen a LOT of use for shoulders, lower back, knees, ankles, neck, etc. It is a VERY versatile size! So far, no signs of wear after four years. Here on Amazon to buy one for my father-in-law.
A few pointers shared by my first PT:
1) Store in a zip-lock plastic bag in the freezer to prevent "drying out" of the vinyl cover.
2) Always return to the freezer after the first time you use it- i.e., no long term storage at room temp. This would seem a "no brainer" - you want it to be ready, right? But it also prolongs the life of the product.
3) Put it inside a pillowcase before applying - don't put directly on your skin, but don't put too thick a layer between you and the pack. You can even sew a velcro strap to a pillow case to make an inexpensive "wrap."
4) If you can afford it, buy one for the office freezer (if you have one) and one for home - you'll be more likely to use it throughout the day!
Great cold pack, many uses

I've had my share of sporting injuries and a couple of years ago was in physical therapy for tendonitis in my wrist. The PT used cold, heat, and stretching during my treatments. They used packs similar to these ColPac models, so I bought a few to keep in my freezer. Since that time, I've been amazed at how much I use them. They are great for strains and bumps of all kinds to really take down the inflamation. This large one (23") stays very cold for about 20-30 minutes - just right for an application of cold to in injury. I also use them when I get stress headaches. Placing the pack across the shoulders or resting my head on it in a recliner does wonders for these bad headaches. I even put the pack over my eyes, but it's a bit heavy for that - maybe I need to get the one designed for that use. Overall, a durable, reusable, useful item that belongs in any home.
COLD . . . .

I purchased this to use after a knee replacement surgery. It works great. You are only suppose to use Ice or cold for approx 20 minutes and this works perfect and it gets really cold. I bought another one for a friend to use after her knee surgery. I like the size as it covers a large area at one time verses using a ice bag.

Perfect relief after eye surgery

Review Date: March 13, 2009
Reviewer: Joyce E. Popp,
I recently had eye surgery, a few days before the surgery I purchased these for the recovery period. They worked perfectly. I Highly recommend this product, they stay right where they belong. My husband had a migrain and used product for soothing headache relief.

The Col Pac is just the right weight, temperature and flexibility! It is also durable.
This is ideal especially if you buy the sinus mask.

I bought two of the sinus masks.......however they don't stay cold for very long. So I ordered this and put it inside the sinus mask .....lasts at least 30 min. and takes migraine headaches away. i do have two of the masks. so I trade off with them. excellent product.
Great Product

This is just like the ones they use in physical therapy offices. Works great and will give you about 20-30 minutes of cold wherever you put it. I just had knee surgery and purchased two of these. It will mold to your body and big enough to keep the swelling down in the entire area. I also use it on my back and shoulders. Well worth your money!
Perfect for MMA

This with the medium sized rectangle ice pack make for a perfect combo. Recommend for anyone who is active.
Easy to use cold pack

Review Date: April 5, 2010
Reviewer: Javan M. Deloach,
I purchased this cold pack to replace an ice bag. Using the ice bag required a tedious process of putting ice in the small opening, then emptying the water after use. This cold pack only requires placement in the freezer, then removal for use. The size is just right for wrapping around a knee. It is soft and pliable during use, and is quite durable.
nice after a massage

Review Date: May 8, 2010
Reviewer: Carol Ouellette,
I love getting massages and get them often but there some of my really tight areas have a tendency to bruise after getting worked on. Applying a cold pack afterward helps. This is an excellent cold pack. Works great and it's portable. Easy to use. The best part is it keeps me from bruising!
great to have ready in the freezer

I have three of these packs and feel better knowing they are in the freezer, ready to use when needed. They hold cold very well and are flexible enough to mold around your body. They do have a bit of frost on them when you first take them out, but that is to be expected. I'm very pleased with my purchase.
Outstanding--for a cold pack!

Good size for large body areas needing treatment. Comfortable soft plastic, even directly on skin. Better than expected! Requires time and space in your freezer, but worth the wait.
Works well

Reviewer: Danny Cooper,
Works well. Very malleable - I can wrap it around an arm, leg, or shoulder. It stays cold for 20 plus minutes. Before I use the ice pack, I slide a t-shirt over it as a cover and to collect condensation. After using it, I bought one for my mom too.
Great Cold Pack

We love this cold pack, which arrived very promptly! It is softer and thicker than our previous and retains its coldness longer. Would highly recommend this to others.
just like at physical therapy

very soothing. it has weight to it so you can really feel it working. best to lay it flat for a day or two and pat it down every so often to rid of the creases. it is wonderful for anyone who needs pain management!
Nothing can compare...

Reviewer: Maria S., Cleveland, OH
My physical therapist put this thing on me a few times and I finally gave in and bought it. That was two and a half years ago - it has finally given out after being VERY abused. I used it in my cooler several times in a pinch :-)

Pros:
1 -Starts out VERY cold. Far more chill than those little pale things you buy at the discount store. Fresh from the freezer, I can't put it right on my face for migraines with out a few layers of towel.
2- Stays Cold a long time. Thirty minutes is not a stretch.
3 -Highly flexible. Very smooshy.

Cons:
The seams do eventually rip - all that freezing and thawing compounded by being contorted into all the shapes we want it to go into.

I do still rate it as 5-stars since the silica is non-toxic and only slightly oozes out in a non-messy fashion when the seams eventually wear out. The seams can be patched with vinyl patch kits from camping/sporting goods stores ($5 or less for several patches) but I feel that it is still an excellent buy for the price. I've patched my old one for a backup and am also buying a replacement.

Anyone with regular aches and pains should not hesitate on this - it is well worth the money.
Stays Cold

Great cold pack for use on larger body areas, such as lower back. Stays flexible and maintains its cold temperature for 20+ minutes of use.
I Highly Recommend

These ColPacs are just as good as the ones the physical therapists
use. Just keep them in the freezer and they are always ready to go. They also last a long time. After my bilateral knee replacements they have been
some of my best pain relief.

I got this icepack as I use them a lot for my back and I like the larger ice packs and wanted something on par with what I get while at the chiropractor. I picked this one because of the great reviews, but I am kind of disappointed with. It is a good solid ice pack that will last for sometime, but it does not seem to get as cold and last as long as other ones I bought from a local department store. I like the increased weight and it is a little more flexible than my old ones.

If it got a bit colder and lasted longer, I would have gone with a full 5 stars.
Nice & Cold

Review Date: July 26, 2010
Reviewer: Matt,
This cold pack is very good if you need the cold to last a long time. I put two of them in a deep freezer and they got so cold I could hardly stand it. The good thing is that they kept my injured back nice and cold for over 1/2 hour. Too often thinner or smaller packs warm up quickly. I highly recommend it.
